FMA FEATURED IN FEDERAL NEWS RADIO COLUMN HIGHLIGHTING SENATE APPROVAL OF FERS SICK LEAVE CREDIT, OTHER FEDERAL WORKFORCE PROVISIONS - October 22, 2009

NSPS over and FERS Flu cured, Senate Passes Defense Authorization Bill

Federal News Radio, October 22, 2009

The Senate has followed the House's lead and has passed H.R. 2647, National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010 in a 68-29 vote. The bill awaits the President's signature and all federal workers should be watching with anticipation.

Federal News Radio has been following the authorization bill because of the important changes to federal workers pay and benefits.

Jessica Klement is the legislative director for the Federal Managers Association and she joined Federal News Radio's Senior Correspondent Mike Causey to outline the provisions that affect federal workers.

Ms. Klement said that they are

  • Credit for unused sick leave for FERS employees
  • Extends locality pay to federal employees in Alaska, Hawaii, and US territories
  • Fixes the glitch for CSRS employees who go part time toward the end of their careers
  • Allows for annuitants to return to service without offsets to their annuities
  • Allows FERS employees who come back into service, to redeposit their previously cashed out annuity
In a press release the President of the National Treasury Employees Union Colleen Kelley applauded Senate approval of the fiscal 2010 Defense Authorization conference report and called for prompt action by the president to sign into law the accompanying legislation containing a number of provisions of importance to federal employees.

The Federal Managers Association also encouraged President Obama to act quickly and sign the bill into law,

"The Senate's decision to move this critical legislation to the President's desk marks a major victory for members of the civil service and American taxpayers alike," announced FMA National President Darryl Perkinson. "The Federal Managers Association is proud to have played a key role in crafting and advancing several provisions contained in the bill which will strengthen the federal workforce. I respectfully urge the President to reaffirm his commitment to improving the manner in which the federal government operates by signing this legislation into law."

All federal eyes are now on President Obama.
